Waste Management Operations

Our National Service Infrastructure

Regulated medical waste is governed by layered federal, state, and local regulations. The responsibility for proper waste handling and disposal under U.S. regulations, liability remains with the generator until final treatment and documented destruction are complete.

Sharps Medical Waste Services is a nationally integrated waste management partner built to protect that responsibility at every stage. As the largest independent national medical waste solutions provider in the United States, we maintain operational control across logistics, processing, compliance governance, and documentation systems. That control allows us to deliver consistency, transparency, and accountability without reliance on fragmented third-party networks.

Our infrastructure is built to serve waste generators of all sizes, multi-site healthcare networks, pharmacies, laboratories, government agencies, and national health systems, all with the same regulatory standard.

Chain of Custody

Traceability is foundational to regulatory defense. Under OSHA, DOT, EPA, and state Medical Waste Management Acts, the generator retains legal responsibility for regulated medical waste until final destruction is documented. Sharps structures its operations to minimize that exposure.

Sharps’ digital infrastructure reinforces beginning to end accountability. SharpsTracer™ provides electronic manifest tracking, treatment verification, and long-term documentation retention. Multi-site organizations gain centralized visibility across distributed locations, strengthening audit readiness and operational transparency. AssetTracer™ supports serialized tracking of containers where applicable, ensuring that physical assets and waste streams remain documented throughout the service lifecycle.Every container processed through Sharps’ system is traceable from the point of generation to final disposal.

Route Service Technicians

Each pickup event represents a regulated transfer of custody. Sharps Route Service Technicians are trained to operate within OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standards and DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations, recognizing that transportation is a compliance function, not merely a logistical one.

Technicians verify container integrity, confirm documentation, and execute secure handling practices during every service interaction.

Compliance and Documentation

Sharps’ transportation operations are structured to meet federal and state transport requirements. Vehicles operate under proper permits, with regulated containment, labeling, and documentation controls.

Pickup verification, manifest reconciliation, and digital capture of service records are integrated into our operational workflow. Documentation is recorded, retained, and reconciled through centralized systems to maintain regulatory continuity from facility to treatment.

Mailback Logistics & Serialized Systems

Sharps pioneered compliant medical waste mailback systems in the United States to expand access to proper disposal for small generators. Mailback programs require DOT-compliant packaging, correct hazard classification, serialized tracking, and documented receipt at processing facilities.

Returned containers are reconciled upon arrival, processed through regulated treatment protocols, and certified upon destruction. Mailback is engineered compliance, particularly valuable for dental offices, physician practices, pharmacies, infusion providers, and community programs where routine route service may not be operationally efficient.

Facilities

  • Nationwide Coverage: Sharps maintains a nationally integrated network of service locations, transfer points, and treatment partnerships that allow us to deliver consistent compliance across state lines.
  • Treatment Network: Our treatment network is structured to ensure that regulated medical waste, pharmaceutical waste, and specialized streams are processed in accordance with applicable federal and state requirements. Facilities operate under appropriate environmental permits and documented operating protocols. Sharps select treatment methods based on waste classification, jurisdictional mandates, sustainability considerations, and operational efficiency. Treatment is not a one-size-fits-all decision; it is a regulated process requiring technical evaluation and documented validation.
  • Security: Medical and pharmaceutical waste present inherent risks, including infection exposure and diversion. Sharps facilities incorporate controlled access, secure staging areas, and monitored handling processes to safeguard materials from receipt through final processing. Pharmaceutical waste, particularly controlled substances, is handled under documented chain-of-custody procedures designed to prevent diversion and support DEA compliance.

Types of Technologies

Technology selection is driven by regulatory appropriateness and environmental considerations.Sharps utilizes a range of treatment technologies based on waste classification and regulatory requirements. Steam sterilization, commonly referred to as autoclave treatment, remains a widely accepted method for inactivating regulated medical waste through validated time, temperature, and pressure cycles. In specific jurisdictions or waste categories, additional technologies may include:

Steam Sterilization (Autoclave)

High-temperature, high-pressure steam inactivation for regulated medical waste. Validated time, temperature, and pressure cycles are documented and recorded.

Pyrolysis

Advanced thermal decomposition technology used in certain hazardous or specialized waste applications.

Thermal Treatment

Thermal Treatment Controlled heat processing methods aligned with state requirements.

Ozonation

Ozone-based microbial inactivation technologies in select jurisdictions.

Incineration (Where Mandated)

Utilized only when required by law or for specific pharmaceutical waste classifications.

SUD Reclamation Programs

Sharps supports sustainable drug destruction initiatives that reduce environmental burden while maintaining DEA compliance.

Chemical Inactivation

Chemical inactivation treatment uses chlorine dioxide to inactivate microorganisms and support the safe management of regulated waste.

The Process

Upon arrival at a treatment facility, materials are weighed and reconciled against manifest documentation. Where applicable, serialized tracking data are confirmed and recorded.

Waste is staged in controlled environments before treatment. Validated processing cycles are monitored and documented to confirm microbial inactivation or destruction standards are met. Following treatment, volume reduction occurs prior to transfer to approved disposal facilities.

Final certification of destruction is documented and retained electronically, formally closing the generator’s regulatory loop.

Washlines

Where reusable containment systems are deployed, Sharps utilizes structured washing and decontamination processes to maintain infection control integrity. Containers undergo controlled decanting, high-pressure flushing, temperature-regulated wash cycles, sanitization, and quality inspection prior to reintroduction into service. Wash protocols are designed to support both safety and sustainability objectives while meeting applicable regulatory standards.

Safety

Workforce protection is integrated into facility operations. Employees undergo OSHA-aligned safety training, PPE certification, spill response preparation, and hazard communication education. Environmental health oversight is embedded into facility management to support both regulatory compliance and operational discipline.

Standards & Regulatory Alignment

Sharps’ containment systems are selected and deployed in alignment with applicable puncture resistance, leak resistance, and transport standards. Containers are designed to meet structural integrity requirements and appropriate hazard labeling protocols.

Container selection is a compliance decision grounded in regulatory performance criteria.

Operations are aligned with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standards, DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations, EPA frameworks, DEA requirements for controlled substances, and individual state Medical Waste Management Acts.

Sharps continuously monitors regulatory updates and adjusts operational protocols accordingly. Because the generator retains legal responsibility, alignment with evolving regulation remains central to our service model.

Sharps supports customers through practical guidance on waste classification, segregation accuracy, documentation retention, and storage timelines. Education strengthens audit readiness and reduces exposure to citations, fines, and corrective action plans.

Been having issues with Dupixent sending me wrong sharps containers to disposal of pens. Ended up working with Andrea Juarez who was FANTASTIC !!!!!!! She could not have been more helpful in taking ownership of my issue regarding attempting to get OPTUM pharmacy to send me the correct containers. She explained she will speak to the folks over at Client Services or something at OPTUM to see about shipping me the correct container – ?SKU#: 11000 immediately for NY, and ensure that when I change deliveries to my vacation home in Florida, that the correct Sharps container will be shipped there, also. She told me to expect a call from her after this weekend with the results of her conversation with the fulfillment folks. I fully anticipate to hear back from her after the weekend. Again, I cannot emphasize strongly what an asset she is to your organization!!!
