Safety is easy to talk about. Practicing it consistently, mile after mile and year after year, is what makes the difference.
For Sharps Medical Waste Services route technician Joseph Papillion, that consistency recently earned national recognition. Joseph was named a 2026 Samsara Driver Cup Safety Consistency Champion, an award recognizing top professional drivers nationwide.
The recognition came as a surprise.
Joseph initially thought he was receiving something similar to an employee-of-the-month award. Once he understood what the certificate represented, his reaction changed quickly.
It was real surprising, real shocking… It was exciting.
Joseph has spent approximately five years working at the facility where he is now a route technician. Before moving into his current role, he worked as a material handler, giving him experience with different parts of the operation.
When asked what has contributed most to his safety record, Joseph did not describe an elaborate system.
His answer was much simpler: get enough sleep, stay focused and avoid distractions.
That discipline matters in a role where safety extends well beyond the driver.
Sharps route technicians travel into the communities we serve every day, supporting healthcare facilities and other regulated waste generators while safely moving materials through the waste management process. The decisions made behind the wheel affect employees, customers and everyone sharing the road.
For Joseph, there is also a very personal reason to take that responsibility seriously.
He has a family waiting for him at home. When asked what keeps him motivated to remain safe year after year, that was ultimately where his answer led: doing the job and returning home safely at the end of the day.
As Sharps continues to grow and new route technicians join the company, Joseph’s advice to them is straightforward:
Stay focused and don’t let anything distract you on the road.
Even when other drivers create frustrating situations, Joseph says he keeps his attention where it belongs.
I really don’t take my eyes off the road.
It is uncomplicated advice, but that is precisely what makes it useful. Safe driving is built through decisions repeated every day, even when nobody is watching.
