Medical Waste Disposal in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Sharps Medical Waste Services picks up and disposes of medical waste for Chattanooga practices. Service runs as scheduled route pickup, mailback, or a mix of both, as part of Sharps MWS service across Tennessee. Coverage spans Hamilton County, from the specialty practices on the Erlanger East campus to offices near the Georgia line.

Service is sized to what each office actually produces, so a two-chair dental suite is never priced like a hospital wing. Cost is a compliance risk too. Tennessee asks little of practices directly, so paying red bag rates for ordinary trash is the easier risk to miss. Sharps MWS keeps pricing transparent, with no hidden fees.

What Tennessee Requires of Medical Practices

Tennessee places few direct requirements on the practices that produce non-hazardous medical waste. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) confirms it does not directly regulate the generator, meaning the business that produces the waste. There is no state registration to file. There is no state storage clock or shipment tracking to keep.

TDEC handles this waste under the state solid waste rules, Rule Chapter 0400-11-01. Tennessee updated its medical waste definition on July 15, 2025, to cover blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM), cultures and stocks, pathological waste, used sharps, and exposed research animals. A soiled glove qualifies only if it would release blood or OPIM (other potentially infectious materials) when compressed, or is caked with it.

Light regulation is not the same as no regulation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) bloodborne pathogens standard still governs how staff handle this waste. If on-site storage draws a complaint or causes an environmental problem, TDEC can act, and it looks to the industry’s best management practices. Sharps MWS builds every Chattanooga program on those practices, backed by our compliance support.

Safe Handling & Staff Protection

Safe handling in Chattanooga offices depends on the container, because there is no state storage clock that forces a full container to be swapped out. A container that sits for weeks has to stay sealed, upright, and out of reach of patients, including children in specialty clinics. Sharps MWS supplies containers that are safe to handle and secure when closed.

The generator holds legal responsibility for the waste until it is treated and its destruction documented.

That makes the record matter more in lighter touch states, not less. You decide what goes in the container. We keep a documented chain of custody from your door to final destruction.

Pathological Waste

Pharmaceutical Waste

Some discarded drugs, including warfarin, are federally listed hazardous waste. Just 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of acutely toxic P-listed waste can move a site into a stricter category. Sharps MWS pharmaceutical disposal keeps listed drugs separate.

Hazardous Waste

Formalin, solvents, and lab chemicals fall under hazardous waste rules, not medical waste rules. Sharps MWS hazardous waste collection runs alongside medical waste service, so one building needs one vendor.

Mailback Disposal

Compliance Training

When the state asks little of the practice, your team is the safeguard. Sharps MWS compliance training helps Chattanooga staff segregate waste correctly and use each container as designed.

Tennessee Regulatory Resources

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation keeps its guidance on its Tennessee medical waste page. Sharps MWS also explains when used PPE counts as regulated medical waste, a common source of avoidable red bag cost.

Chattanooga Medical Waste Disposal FAQs

No. TDEC confirms the February 2026 amendment only changed how certain impacted soils are handled as special waste at landfills.

Live and attenuated vaccines are, once discarded. Tennessee lists them under cultures and stocks, so pediatric offices, family practices, and immunizing pharmacies should send them out with medical waste pickup.

No, the Ringgold office follows Georgia rules. Georgia calls it biomedical waste and applies its full rule once an office produces 100 pounds a month. Sharps MWS can serve both locations under one relationship.

Yes, through mailback, with no contract and no pickup schedule. It suits a new office in East Brainerd, Ooltewah, or Collegedale, and Sharps MWS can add scheduled pickup as volume grows.

Sharps MWS prices service by what the office actually produces. You are never charged for unused capacity, and what Sharps MWS quotes is what appears on your invoice.
